Discussion between a British officer and French privateer Robert Surcouf in the Napoleonic Wars:

British Officer: You French fight for money, while we British fight for honour.

Surcouf: Sir, a man fights for what he lacks the most.

A Turkish soldier said to the Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan before the Battle of Manzikert: "My Sultan, a grand enemy army is approaching", and Alp Arslan is said to have replied, "Then we are also approaching them".

In the battle, the Byzantine Emperor Diogenes was captured by Turks and after the battle, the famous conversation between him and Alp Arslan occurred,

Alp Arslan: "What would you do if I were brought before you as a prisoner?"
Diogenes: "Perhaps I'd kill you, or exhibit you in the streets of Constantinople."
Alp Arslan: "My punishment is far heavier. I forgive you, and set you free."

"The city is fallen and I am still alive."
"To surrender the city to you is beyond my authority or anyone else's who lives in it, for all of us, after taking the mutual decision, shall die of our own free will without trying to save our lives."

I answer your shitpost with a reason for why i added a quote i liked.

You say i shitpost.

Ok?

You came to a board dedicated to historical discussion full of discussion about actual history, most of which is to at least a reasonable level of discourse. You decide to contribute something some random guy said in the past couple of years about a video game. If you cannot see why that isn't what belongs on this board, you are beyond hope.

Stick to actual history, I've added a specific rule for your personal level of obliviousness.
Any more nonsense will be delet x

Probably the best speech given by an Irishman in centuries.
De-Valera-an unpopular man for most Irish people who's redemption came through his actions in WW2-gave a speech in response to Churchill's controversial attack upon the Neutrality of Ireland. Churchill's speech essentially both implied and openly stated that it is not only a possibility but rather his right and necessity to prepare to take military action against the Irish Free State for defensive purposes against Germany. His continued bitterness toward Irish Neutrality and open mockery of their decision to formally join the war effort was essentially put down and buried by a single speech made by De Valera.

The speech was not aggressive, not hostile, not patronising or sabre-rattling. It was a calm and collected speech, spoken in a soft tone by the then-Taoiseach. He essentially said that the attitude that the rights of some people and smaller nations should be tossed aside for the need or will of Large Nations is the reason World War 1 and now World War 2 (as well as potentially WW3) happened in the first place, and that the callous attitude that all should simply bend to the will of their powerful neighbours directly contradicts the ideas the Britain claimed to be defending.
Despite Ireland's utter inability to commit to the war effort even if it wanted to (and despite the huge amount of volunteers heading over to fight) the strong defence of Ireland's neutrality likely saved the nation from being dragged into a destructive conflict and is seen as the first stepping stone toward improved Anglo-Irish relations.

De Valera went toe to toe with the titan of a man in England and came away the better man.

Some key quotes from it:

"a like justification can be framed for similar acts of aggression elsewhere and no small nation adjoining a great Power could ever hope to be permitted to go it own way in peace."
On Churchill's statement referring to the temptation of invading Ireland for tactical purposes against Germany in WW2.

"Could he not find in his heart the generosity to acknowledge that there is a small nation that stood alone not for one year or two, but for several hundred years against aggression; that endured spoliations, famines, massacres in endless succession; that was clubbed many times into insensibility, but that each time on returning consciousness took up the fight anew; a small nation that could never be got to accept defeat and has never surrendered her soul?"
Referring to a statement of Churchill's pride in Britain's "stand alone" when France had fallen before the USA joined WW2.
